Sengoku Rance on Steam Deck: Unsupported, but Playable?

Steam's own compatibility check returns unsupported. What that actually means, and what community reports say about playing it anyway.

Sengoku Rance Steam Deck: Unsupported, but Playable?

No, Sengoku Rance is not a supported Steam Deck game. Steam's compatibility endpoint for app 3867170 returns category 1 with the token SteamOSDoesNotSupport, and the store page carries no Verified or Playable badge to soften it. Players are running it anyway: on the current Steam build the community route is a four-byte executable patch applied through Desktop Mode, and Chinese-language Steam reviews from launch day point Deck owners at exactly that tool. No verified Deck-hardware test has been published, so treat the workaround as reported, not confirmed.

What Steam's compatibility check actually returns

Pulled directly on 2026-10-04, appid 3867170, US English store region:

Source What comes back
ajaxgetdeckappcompatibilityreport?nAppID=3867170 success: 1, resolved_category: 1, token #SteamDeckVerified_TestResult_SteamOSDoesNotSupport
Same endpoint, SteamOS field steamos_resolved_category: 1, token #SteamOS_TestResult_SteamOSDoesNotSupport
Same endpoint, Steam Machine field machine_resolved_category: 1, token #SteamMachine_TestResult_SteamOSDoesNotSupport
Store page HTML no Steam Deck Compatibility block anywhere on the page
appdetails steam_deck_compat field absent entirely
appdetails platforms windows: true, mac: false, linux: false
packagedetails controller full_gamepad: false

So there are three negative signals stacked on each other. Steam never reviewed the app for Deck or SteamOS, the store page therefore has nothing to display, and the package ships Windows binaries only. That last point is the one that matters most for Linux: this is not a native build waiting for a wrapper, so nothing here is fixable by Valve-side configuration.

No badge is not the same as reviewed and failed

A title Valve actually tests can land on Unsupported and still show a card explaining why. This one shows nothing, because appdetails carries no steam_deck_compat block to render. The endpoint still answers, but it defaults to the unsupported bucket instead of reporting a test.

What unsupported does and does not mean on a Deck

Unsupported is a rating, not a lock. Steam Deck Gaming Mode ships Proton, and forcing a Windows-only title through it is a supported user action, not a bypass. ProtonDB, the community database most Deck buyers check first, has no report for appid 3867170 at all — its summaries API returns a 404 page as of 2026-10-04, so nobody has filed a Platinum, Gold, Bronze or Broken rating for this game yet. You are the early test case either way.

What you lose outside the rating is any guarantee on the things Verified normally checks: controller remapping, default graphics settings that fit the handheld screen, and text legibility at 800p. The package declares full_gamepad: false, so there is no controller layer to remap in the first place. For a title whose interface is a dense 2D strategy map of small text panels, legibility is the part that matters, and it is the part no reviewer has looked at.

What players report on the current Steam build

The route people use is a small unofficial GitHub project, yuzuatri/Sengoku-Rance-Deck-Fix. It exists because the Simplified Chinese Steam build starts with Steam reporting the game as running but no window appearing. What the project actually does is deliberately tiny:

Property Value, checked 2026-10-04
Licence MIT, no game files, self-described as unofficial
Created / last pushed 2026-10-02 / 2026-10-03
Releases 0.1.0 "patch" (2026-10-02), 0.2.0 "font" (2026-10-03)
Stars / open issues 3 / 0
Patch size four bytes in the game executable
Safety checks the executable's SHA-256, keeps the original at .rance-proton-fix/Rance7.original.exe, leaves unknown versions alone
Recognised build Simplified Chinese executable from build 25565749
Stated test coverage "Tested on Linux with Proton Experimental. Steam Deck hardware testing is pending."
Requirements Python 3.9 or newer; Desktop Mode on Deck

Three-day-old project, three stars, zero issues. That is the maturity level you are signing up for.

The Steam review feed from launch day is where the community report lives, translated from the reviews themselves:

  • A Simplified Chinese review, positive, points Deck owners who cannot launch at the GitHub project, describes downloading the release ZIP, extracting it and running launch.sh, and adds the same font tip the project documents.
  • Another Simplified Chinese review, positive, says the publisher was still up overnight fixing compatibility on the SD card model, and that the game already ran normally for that player at 3 AM on launch night.
  • A Traditional Chinese review, negative, says the opposite: after installing the patch the game would no longer launch and the mouse stopped responding, and removing and reinstalling did not help. That player had already bought the game on DLsite and bought again for the patch.

Together those three say the SD card launch issue was being actively worked on during release week, and the patch route is reported working by some owners and breaking for at least one other. No official patch note exists either — the Steam news feed for appid 3867170 is still empty, so any fix that lands now lands silently.

The Desktop Mode checklist

Straight from the project's README, with nothing added:

Step Action Detail
1 Close the game, let Steam finish updating Patching a stale build wastes your time
2 Switch to Desktop Mode Not Gaming Mode — the launcher is a shell script
3 Download and extract the release ZIP Mark launch.sh executable under Properties → Permissions if it will not run
4 Run launch.sh, confirm Apply Fallback from the extracted folder: python3 patch.py apply
5 Start the game normally through Steam No launch options needed
— Game not found? Add --game-dir "/path/to/Sengoku Rance"
— Optional Chinese font Put your own simhei.ttf beside patch.py; copied into steamapps/compatdata/3867170/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts/
— Before the font step Launch the game once so the Proton prefix exists, or pass --proton-prefix "/path/to/pfx"
— Undo Re-run the launcher, or python3 patch.py restore; check with python3 patch.py status

Two warnings from the same README. The font is not bundled — bring your own licensed simhei.ttf, and installing it only makes the font available, it does not force the game to use it. And a Steam update may remove the fix entirely, so this is a recurring five-minute job, not one-time setup.

The patch is version-locked to one executable

It recognises the Simplified Chinese executable from build 25565749 and leaves unknown versions alone. If a Steam update changes that executable, the patch silently stops applying and your no-window launch comes back. Check status after every update rather than assuming your working install is still working.

Test the text-heavy 2D interface first

The store page lists 1280x768 or better Display and adds, in full: Lag may occur from loading menus or maps. Turn off other programs before running the game. The Deck's native panel is 1280x800, so height is not your problem. What is unproven is everything else.

AliceSoft's System 4.0 engine — the one a save-format research tool identifies inside the Steam build — predates the handheld by two decades, and this game is a strategy map of dozens of small labelled panels plus a dialogue box layer for its story scenes. Under Proton in Desktop Mode the window is composited by the desktop session rather than a Deck-aware shell, so you get a Windows-era window at handheld resolution with no Verified review behind the text sizing. Check three things before committing an evening:

  • Map legibility at 800p. Open the province screen first, not the intro. It is the densest screen in the game and the fastest way to learn whether panel text is readable at native resolution.
  • Dialogue box sizing. Story scenes layer text boxes over the map UI. If text renders outside the window at your Desktop Mode resolution, you hit it inside ten minutes.
  • Menu load stutter. The store page's own note flags lag on menus and maps. On Deck storage that is a wait, not a freeze, but it compounds across a campaign that opens these menus constantly.

If the text is unusable at native resolution, Proton's own resolution and scaling options are the next lever, and that is a personal setup problem rather than something this guide can answer. If you are unwilling to tune anything, treat this as a desktop game and read what Sengoku Rance actually is before buying for a Deck specifically.

What is verified, and what is not

Verified on 2026-10-04 against Steam's own endpoints: the category 1 verdict and its SteamOSDoesNotSupport token on all three fields, the absence of any Deck badge or steam_deck_compat block, Windows-only platform flags, full_gamepad: false, the exact system-requirement text, the empty Steam news feed, and every field of the GitHub project quoted above.

Community report, not verified: that the patched build launches and plays on Deck hardware. The project's README says Deck hardware testing is pending, ProtonDB has no entry, and one review reports the patch breaking a working install. Not established: whether the SD card issue being fixed on launch night is resolved in the build you download today, and whether any owner has posted a clean end-to-end Deck report. SteamDB's patch history was not readable from here, so no patch date or changelog is quoted on this page.

The rest of this site covers the game for the 2026-10-01 Steam release: Steam version differences against the 2006 original, the beginner opening once you are in, freeze and save safety if the engine misbehaves, and the play order guide if you are still choosing an entry in the series.

FAQ

Is Sengoku Rance verified or playable on Steam Deck? Neither. The compatibility endpoint returns category 1 with the SteamOS-unsupported token, and the store page shows no compatibility card at all. It is a Windows-only release with no Linux build.

Can Deck owners play it anyway? Community reports say yes, via Proton plus a four-byte patch applied in Desktop Mode. Other owners report the game already launching after launch-week compatibility fixes, and one reports the patch breaking their install. No verified Deck-hardware test has been published.

Does it work on a Linux desktop? The patch tool's README states it was tested on Linux with Proton Experimental, so Linux desktop is the best-documented configuration. The Deck version is the untested one.

Will a Steam update break my patched install? Probably. The README warns that Steam updates may remove the fix, and the patch is locked to one recognised executable build, 25565749. Re-run python3 patch.py status after every update.
